Causality is a story development and writing app from Hollywood Camera Work, the filmmaking-course company behind Shot Designer. It began as a story sequencer, a timeline for arranging plot beats the way an editor arranges clips. The current product page pitches it as a writing app for screenplays and novels, where a visual whiteboard updates the script and Snippets hold single plot or character beats. It is still sold and updated: the downloads page lists build 4.1.13 for Windows 64-bit, Windows ARM, Mac Universal, Linux 64-bit and Linux ARM, without dates.
The price is the hard part. Hollywood Camera Work publishes none, only the promise of free outlining. Forum users in October 2019 cited $279 for a permanent licence and a monthly option. The page also lists sync, sharing, team collaboration and mobile apps as future features. If you need any of those now, or a price you can see up front, the tools below cover visual plotting first and full screenplay editors after.
Prices below are as of November 8, 2026. Our method is on How we review tools.

Plottr
Plottr is a visual planner and nothing else, which keeps it close to what Causality does best. Each plotline is a coloured row, each scene a card, and you drag cards along the timeline until the structure works. Templates cover common story structures, and the series bible keeps characters and places linked to the scenes they appear in.
The base plan is a desktop app for Windows and Mac that works offline and keeps backups on your device. Plottr Pro adds a browser app, cloud sync and real-time collaboration. Every plan covers unlimited household devices, and the trial runs 30 days.
Best for: Novelists and series writers who want Causality-style plotting with a known price.
Pricing:
- Plottr: about $80/year or $199 lifetime, desktop only
- Plottr Pro: about $15/month, $99/year or $699 lifetime
- Plottr Pro + Community: about $19/month, $160/year or $799 lifetime
- 30-day free trial
Watch out for:
- Auto-renewal cannot be turned off. You cancel by contacting support.
- It plans but does not write. You still need a screenplay editor or word processor for the draft, and each collaborator needs their own Pro subscription.

Arc Studio
Arc Studio is the pick for screenwriters who liked how Causality ties the plan to the pages. Its Pro plan includes outlining tools and season outlines next to the script editor, so beats and scenes live in the same project as the draft. It formats screenplays automatically and exports to Fountain and Final Draft, even on the free plan.
The pricing page lists cloud sync and automatic backups on every plan. Paid plans add a desktop app and an iPhone and iPad app, which Causality still lists as a future feature. Optional AI credits buy a voiced table read, character images and a research assistant. For other editors in this group, see our Arc Studio alternatives.
Best for: Screenwriters who want outlining and writing in one cloud app with phone access.
Pricing:
- Free: 2 scripts, watermarked PDF export, no desktop or iOS app
- Essentials: $69/year
- Pro: $99/year, with outlining, collaborators, revisions and history
- 7-day Pro trial on every account
Watch out for:
- The outlining tools are on Pro only. Essentials is a writing app without the planning features Causality users come for.
- The pricing page lists no monthly price, so you commit to a year.
Official site: Arc Studio.
Aeon Timeline
Aeon Timeline is the closest match to Causality's original timeline view. Events sit on a real time axis, characters attach to events, and the app can track ages and story arcs across the timeline. That makes it strong for thrillers, sagas and anything with flashbacks, where Causality's sequencing helped too.
It is one of the few tools here with no subscription. The pricing page sells a perpetual licence for up to five devices on Mac, Windows and iOS, with a year of updates. It syncs with Scrivener and Ulysses, so you plan in Aeon and write elsewhere.
Best for: Writers of complex plots who want a timeline tool they own.
Pricing:
- Perpetual licence: $65 one-time, one year of updates, up to 5 devices
- Extra year of updates: $35, optional
- 14-day free trial
Watch out for:
- There is no Linux or Android version on the pricing page. Causality users on Linux lose a platform.
- There is no screenplay editor. Script writers pair it with Final Draft, Fade In or another editor.
Official site: Aeon Timeline.
Scrivener
Scrivener is a long-form writing app with planning built in. Scenes are documents you shuffle in a binder or on a corkboard of index cards, and the outline and the draft are the same thing. A user on the Outliner Software forum called Causality a more visual alternative to Scrivener with more focus on characters, and the trade runs the other way too: Scrivener is less visual but writes the whole book.
Versions 3.5.2 on macOS 11+, 3.1.6 on 64-bit Windows 10+ and 1.2.4 on iOS are listed on the overview page. It formats scripts and saves screenplays to Final Draft format with notes intact. The trial counts 30 days.
Best for: Novelists who want the plan and the manuscript in one file.
Pricing:
- iOS and iPadOS: $23.99 one-time
- macOS and Windows: one-time licences, prices shown only in the checkout
- 30-day free trial
Watch out for:
- Literature & Latte shows desktop prices only at checkout.
- The Windows version trails the Mac one, 3.1.6 against 3.5.2, and there is no Linux build.
Official site: Scrivener.
Final Draft
Final Draft's .fdx file is the script format many producers, agents and contests ask for. Version 13 includes a Beat Board for loose ideas, an Outline Editor and Structure Lines, so some of Causality's planning moves into the script app. Tracked revisions, comments and automatic version saves cover the rewrite stage.
You can buy it once or rent it. The product page shows the subscription bundled with Final Draft Cloud, and one licence works on two computers at a time. It runs on macOS 12 or later and Windows 11 on Intel or AMD chips.
Best for: Screenwriters sending scripts to studios, agents and contests.
Pricing:
- Final Draft 13: $249.99 one-time
- Subscription with Final Draft Cloud: $16.99/month, or $99.99/year
- 5-day trial on subscriptions
Watch out for:
- Final Draft 13 does not run on iPad or Chromebook. The iPad app, Final Draft Go, is sold separately.
- No Linux version, and Windows needs version 11 on Intel or AMD hardware.
Official site: Final Draft.
WriterDuet
WriterDuet was built for co-writing, which Causality still lists as a planned feature. Two writers can type in the same script at once from any browser. The free plan includes outlining tools, scene numbering and import and export, per the plan guide.
Paid plans start with Plus, which adds a desktop app. Pro is marked as the most popular tier. All three are billed monthly or yearly and can be cancelled at any time.
Best for: Writing teams and partners who need to work in the same draft at once.
Pricing:
- Free: 3 projects, one document each
- Plus: $9.99/month or $89.88/year
- Pro: $11.99/month or $107.88/year
- Premium: $13.99/month or $125.88/year
- Prices per WriterDuet's help article, updated June 17, 2025
Watch out for:
- Three scripts is the free ceiling, and the desktop app needs a paid plan.
- These prices come from a WriterDuet help article, so confirm at checkout.
Official site: WriterDuet.
Fade In
Fade In is a professional screenplay editor sold for a one-time price, and like Causality it has a native Linux build. The download page lists version 5.0.15 for Windows 7 or later, macOS 10.10 or later on Intel and Apple Silicon, and 64-bit Linux. Updates to the version you buy are free, per the support page.
One personal licence covers your own computers on any mix of Windows, Mac and Linux. Fade In Access, an optional subscription, adds cloud storage, backups, version history and online editing, and the same name covers the iOS and Android apps.
Best for: Screenwriters who want to pay once and keep writing on Linux.
Pricing:
- Fade In: $79.95 one-time (listed down from $99.95)
- Free demo with every feature except realtime collaboration
- Fade In Access: optional monthly or yearly subscription, no public price
Watch out for:
- Planning tools are lighter than Causality's. There is no timeline view for moving story beats around.
- The demo shows a registration reminder after 10 pages and watermarks printed scripts.

When to stay with Causality
Stay with Causality if you already own a licence and work alone on one computer. It still runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, including ARM machines, which few rivals match, and it keeps getting bug-fix builds. Its mix of a visual board and a live script remains unusual. If you plan to shoot what you write, Hollywood Camera Work also lists Shot Designer 3D integration as a coming feature, and our StudioBinder alternatives cover the production side.
Frequently asked questions
What is Causality story planner?
A story development app from Hollywood Camera Work for screenplays and novels. You build the story from small units called Snippets on a visual board, and the script updates as you rearrange them. The product page offers free outlining.
Is Causality screenwriting software still updated?
Yes. The downloads page lists bug-fix builds up to 4.1.13 for Windows, Mac and Linux, and the product page describes a version 1.1 feature set with 100+ languages, multilingual spellcheck and Deep Story tracking of characters' emotional states.
How much does Causality cost?
No price appears on Hollywood Camera Work's pages today. Outlining is free. In 2019, forum users reported a $279 permanent licence and a monthly option, but treat those figures as old and check inside the app.
Does Causality work on iPad or phone?
Not yet. Mobile apps are listed as a future feature, and an April 2025 Capterra review lists the missing phone and tablet app, missing cloud saving and no multi-device access as its cons. Arc Studio, Scrivener and Aeon Timeline all have iOS apps.
