Horizon Workrooms Alternatives for VR Meetings and Virtual Desks

Horizon Workrooms no longer exists. Meta discontinued it as a standalone app on February 16, 2026, and the notice reported by UploadVR on January 16 said all Workrooms data would be deleted on that date. Meta pointed users to Arthur, Microsoft Teams Immersive and other meeting apps on the Horizon Store. For the solo Personal Office, the Windows 11 Remote Desktop feature in Horizon OS now covers extra virtual monitors.

Two other names from older lists are also out. Microsoft retired Mesh on December 1, 2025 and disabled its Quest app, and ENGAGE XR announced that its services would shut down on October 31, 2026. The six picks below are all live, and they cover the two things people used Workrooms for: a virtual desk with your computer screens, and a shared room for team meetings.

Quick comparison

Immersed

Most Workrooms sessions started with someone pulling a laptop screen into VR, and Immersed does that job on Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro. The companion app runs on Mac, PC and Linux, according to its pricing page. The free Starter Mode gives up to three virtual screens, public co-working rooms and, for a limited time, private rooms for four collaborators.

Pro raises the cap to five screens at up to 3840x2160 and private rooms of 15 or more people. Host and guests can share a screen inside a collaboration room, which replaces the Workrooms habit of presenting from a laptop to colleagues at the virtual table.

Best for: Remote workers who used Workrooms mainly for extra monitors and small working sessions.

• Immersed Pro: as low as $5.99 per month, billed monthly, up to 5 screens and 15+ collaborators

Watch out for:

• The company's own Visor headset has slipped for years. Pre-orders opened in September 2023, and in July 2026 Immersed raised the Standard 4K Edition from $500 to $700 and still required a Visor Plus subscription of $40 a month for 24 months. Buy a Quest instead of waiting.
• Two Starter perks, the four-person private room and offline mode, are labelled limited time only.

Arthur

Meta named Arthur first in its shutdown notice, per UploadVR, so it is the closest thing to an official successor. The homepage now sells it as one space for humans and AI to work together, on web, PC and VR.

The product comes in two parts. Spaces hosts immersive sessions such as onboarding and design reviews, guided by AI. Vibe collects stakeholder input through AI-led interviews. Both are aimed at companies that want a managed deployment, not a single user with a headset.

Best for: Companies that ran Workrooms for whole teams and want a vendor that handles rollout.

Watch out for:

• No self-serve plan, trial or public price is listed, so a small team cannot just sign up and try it.

Frame

Frame runs in a web browser, so the same room opens on a laptop, a phone or a headset. That solves the main Workrooms headache, where colleagues without a Quest joined as a flat video tile. Here everyone gets an avatar in the same 3D room.

Pricing is per Frame, meaning per virtual space, not per person. The free plan lets you create three Frames with eight people in each. A team of 30 that meets in one room fits the Plus plan.

Best for: Teams where only a few people own headsets but everyone should share the same room.

Watch out for:

• Each Frame is capped by its plan. The free and $10 tiers stop at eight people, so a 60-person all-hands needs the $200 Pro tier.

Fluid

UploadVR singled out Fluid in its shutdown report for its focus on screen sharing in VR. It is a multi-window browser and video player that runs entirely on the headset, so there is no PC to set up. You can surround yourself with windows, invite others in, and stream your view to friends.

It sells as a one-off purchase on the Meta Store, with optional extra environments. VRDB shows a 4.5-star rating from about 1,150 ratings. It logs build 0.44.7 as uploaded on November 6, 2026, but the live store build is still 0.44.6 from October 16, 2026.

Best for: Quest owners who want web apps in floating windows without a computer attached.

• $19.99 one-time on the Meta Store; Dunes environment $9.99, Campus $6.99

Watch out for:

• Fluid is a browser, not a meeting tool. It has no whiteboard, calendar invites or desk tracking, so it replaces the Personal Office side of Workrooms more than the meeting rooms.

Spatial

Spatial was once pitched as a VR meeting app. Today its homepage sells a platform for creators and brands, with no-code and Unity tools, more than 2 million creators, and clients such as BMW and Walmart. The same space opens on the web with no download, on mobile, or in VR.

The work angle is now training. Spatial's corporate training page says you can build and host a virtual learning space in minutes, and links to apps on the Meta Quest store, the App Store and Google Play.

Best for: Marketing or HR teams building a branded 3D space for onboarding, training or events.

• Free to create; business pricing through Contact Sales, with no plans or prices on the page

Watch out for:

• The company's attention has moved to games. Its studio Wooster Games makes Animal Company for Quest, which the homepage credits with more than 1 million monthly users, and daily team meetings are no longer the pitch.

Gather

Gather drops the headset. It is a 2D virtual office where each person walks an avatar around a shared map, and walking up to someone starts a conversation. For many Workrooms teams the habit worth keeping was the drop-in feeling, not the VR goggles, and Gather keeps that part.

Gather 2.0 charges per member, and guests are free, says the pricing page. A 30-day trial includes every feature with no card, and a Chrome extension and menu bar mini mode keep it running beside other work.

Best for: Remote teams that want an always-on office everyone can open without buying hardware.

Pricing:

• Essential: $12 per member per month; a yearly toggle shows -20%
• Custom: contact sales, with SSO and regional pricing
• 30-day free trial, no credit card

Watch out for:

• No permanent free plan is listed for Gather 2.0, and the page does not mention VR support at all.

How to choose

If you still have a headset from Workrooms

There is nothing left to stay on. The app and its data were removed on February 16, 2026. The Quest headsets still work, though, and two free options need no new subscription: the Windows 11 Remote Desktop feature in Horizon OS for extra monitors, and the Immersed free plan for screens plus small co-working rooms.
