If the rack yields or the lane overheats, you need finite-element analysis (FEA) or computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Those tools mesh stress and airflow. They do not model a pack-out jam after a week of forklifts. That work is discrete-event simulation (DES): arrivals, queues, resources, and replications. This page is the DES shortlist.
People still mix those physics with the canvas. A multimethod model (agents plus queues plus system dynamics), a 3D plant that already lives in CAD, a process flowchart you can share in a browser, and the flowchart an industrial-engineering course still teaches are different purchases. The free edition is real. It is not a commercial license.
If the system mixes agents, discrete event, and system dynamics, start with AnyLogic. If the layout is 3D and already lives in AutoCAD, Inventor, or Revit, FlexSim is the Autodesk named-user path. If the job is a process model you can share in a browser, Simul8 is the Minitab option. What usually goes wrong when choosing simulation software
Most bad fits start with treating a mesh, a 3D plant, and a process flowchart as the same product.

Four checks: which modeling style the product names (multimethod, 3D discrete-event, or flowchart), whether 3D and CAD import are first-class, whether any commercial price is public, and whether the free or student edition is capped. AnyLogic

AnyLogic is the multimethod tool: discrete event, agent-based, and system dynamics in one model, with 2D and 3D animation and a Cloud you can hand a stakeholder. FlexSim and Tecnomatix will walk the floor. Arena and Simul8 will run the flowchart. AnyLogic is the one that does not force you to pick a single paradigm before you have seen the system.
Personal Learning Edition is free and capped. University Researcher, Professional, and commercial Cloud are quote-only. The current desktop build is 8.9.9, posted 18 Jun 2026. It adds a stacker crane, multiload transporters, and tugger trains. If the warehouse has those objects, start on 8.9.9. An older learning edition will not have the stacker crane. Public Cloud still has a free guest path with short run limits. Subscriber and Private Cloud are sales calls, sized by concurrent cores.
Best for: Teams whose model mixes agents, discrete event, and system dynamics.

- The learning edition limits model size and libraries. A classroom model does not prove the commercial build is in budget.
- Cloud compute for large experiments is a second conversation after the desktop license.

Autodesk FlexSim

FlexSim is 3D discrete-event simulation for plants, warehouses, and logistics. The product Autodesk sells is FlexSim 2026. If the argument you have to win is congestion at pack-out, a 3D run is still the fastest way to get a VP to sit still. AnyLogic can animate in 3D. The product there is still the multimethod canvas, not a plant walkthrough.
Licensing runs through an Autodesk account as named-user software. Expect the quote to look like an Autodesk subscription. Autodesk has shipped an Autodesk Interoperability module for FlexSim 24.2.2 and later: native .ipt, .iam, and .rvt load, plus an updated DWG importer. That is the CAD-import path a plant team is actually buying. A 30-day trial is available. Autodesk signed a collaboration with AWS on 3 Jun 2026 and put Fusion on Marketplace. FlexSim missed that first wave. Do not budget it as an AWS product.
Best for: A manufacturing or warehouse team whose floor already lives in Autodesk CAD.
What you get:
- Native 3D environment. Visual validation first, then statistical runs.
- CAD import so travel times match the real floor, including Inventor, Revit, and updated DWG through the Interoperability module.
- Reusable submodels for pieces of a line.

Why we like it: If the layout already lives in AutoCAD, Inventor, or Revit, you can load that geometry and show congestion in 3D instead of arguing from a flowchart. Named-user licensing through Autodesk is the commercial path.
Limits:
- Commercial is quote-only. Student and trial do not make a price list.
- Not on AWS Marketplace. The June 2026 Autodesk listing is Fusion.
- It is a discrete-event 3D tool. Agent-based social or epidemiological work belongs in AnyLogic.

Simul8

Simul8 is the fast discrete-event tool: build on desktop, share in a browser, hook Excel or Google Sheets, and on the Twin plan live SQL and an API. It is a Minitab company. Licenses sit in the Minitab License Portal. FlexSim is the 3D factory walkthrough. Simul8 is the process model you can put in front of a process owner who will never open a multimethod canvas.
You buy Project, Business, or Twin. Project is getting started. Business adds collaboration, version control, and Visio, BPMN, and Minitab Workspace import. Twin adds live SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Minitab Connect, plus the API, ML-assisted routing, and multi-core. Decision Cloud is the browser runtime for people who will not install the desktop. OptQuest is a paid add-on. No dollars are listed. Directory listings that show a per-user-year seat are not a vendor price.
Best for: Ops and healthcare teams that need a process model they can share in a browser.
What you get:
- Desktop and web on the same subscription family.
- Visual Logic for the bits a flowchart will not express.
- Business: version control, audit, Visio and BPMN import.

Why we like it: You can put a process model in front of a stakeholder this month, in a browser, especially if the team already lives in Minitab or Excel. That is a continuous-improvement purchase, not a digital-factory walkthrough.
Limits:
- Quote-only. Aggregator prices are not a list.
- 3D is not the pitch. If the stakeholder needs a digital factory walkthrough, that is FlexSim.
- Twin live-data work is a different plan than Project. Buying Project and hoping for the API is how the renewal gets ugly.

Rockwell Arena

Arena is Rockwell’s discrete-event product: flowchart modules, a library of distributions, route and path logic, and 2D and 3D animation. It is the tool a lot of industrial-engineering degrees still teach, which is why it stays on shortlists even when the interface looks older than FlexSim. If the existing models are .doe files, switching to a multimethod canvas is a rewrite.
Rockwell does not publish a list price. Student and trial paths exist through Rockwell’s education and partner channels. Commercial is a quote. Agents and system dynamics are AnyLogic’s problem. Cloud collaboration is not the 2026 story Simul8 is telling.
Best for: A team that already models in flowcharts and statistical distributions.
What you get:
- Flowchart modeling with pre-built modules. Custom code is the exception.

Simio is a discrete-event process digital twin: object-oriented 3D models, what-if experiments, and scheduling for plants, warehouses, and supply chains. FlexSim is the Autodesk CAD walkthrough. Tecnomatix is the Teamcenter floor. Simio is the process twin you wire to data when the team will take a commercial quote, or when a school can take the academic grant.
Commercial seats are quote-only. Academic Grant licenses are $0 for qualified faculty, researchers, and students: full professional features, one-year renewable, non-commercial. A time-limited trial exists. Trial and academic models will not open in commercial Simio, so a classroom file is not a migration path. Python integration and AI optimization sit on the academic and commercial product, not as a separate classroom toy.
Best for: Manufacturing and warehouse teams that want a process digital twin.
What you get:
- Object-oriented 3D DES, with what-if experiments and scheduling aimed at a process twin.

- If native Autodesk CAD import is the reason you are looking, FlexSim is the closer path.

Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation X

Siemens Tecnomatix Plant Simulation X is Siemens’ factory material-flow DES: object-oriented 3D plant, line, and logistics models, bottleneck and throughput experiments, and hooks into Teamcenter, NX Line Designer, and the rest of the Tecnomatix stack. FlexSim is the Autodesk CAD path. This is the floor when the plant already lives in Siemens.
Plant Simulation X packages are Essentials (up to 500 objects), Standard (up to 4,000), Advanced, and Runtime. Runtime runs models. It does not author them. A 30-day cloud trial is free. Commercial is quote-only. Partner euro lists are not a Siemens list price. This is factory material flow, not a general-purpose multimethod studio.
Best for: Discrete manufacturers already in Tecnomatix who need a 3D throughput model.

JaamSim Pro is the commercial extension on top of open-source JaamSim. Base JaamSim is free, Apache 2.0, on Windows, macOS, and Linux: drag-and-drop DES, 3D graphics, process-flow objects, resources, and probability libraries. Pro adds transportation, material flow, maps, and vehicle libraries for trucks, trains, ships, bulk terminals, conveyors, and stockyards. That is a mine-to-port chain, not a Siemens-class CAD plant twin.
The open-source core is $0. Pro is quote-only. Inputs are text and human-readable, which is why huge models (hundreds to tens of thousands of components) sit in ordinary version control. Free JaamSim is how you prove the canvas. Pro is how you buy the vehicle and bulk-terminal libraries. Do not treat the Apache license as a commercial Pro seat.
Best for: Mine-to-port, rail, and bulk-terminal modelers who will start on free JaamSim.
What you get:
- Free Apache-2.0 JaamSim core, with a drag-and-drop UI and 3D graphics.
