SystemTools Hyena is a Windows GUI that puts day-to-day admin work in one tree: users, groups, shares, computers, services, sessions, open files, printers, event logs, scheduled jobs, Exchange mailboxes and Active Directory. It is alive. The Hyena product page lists v17.0 and says it manages systems from Windows NT through Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025, with a fully functional 30-day evaluation.
The Hyena pricing page sells only the Enterprise Edition, at $329 per administrator for 1 or 2 licences. That model is fair for a small team but adds up for a large help desk, and some admins now prefer browser-based or scriptable tools over a desktop console. The picks below begin with the closest one-stop GUI and then cover free Microsoft tools that split Hyena's job into parts.
Prices below are as of November 6, 2026. Our method is on How we review tools.

ManageEngine ADManager Plus
ADManager Plus is the nearest thing to Hyena's all-in-one console, moved to a web interface. The Standard edition includes more than 200 reports, delegation and Microsoft 365 and Exchange management, per the ADManager Plus edition list. Professional adds workflows and automation.
Licensing counts domains and help desk technicians rather than every admin seat. A free edition manages up to 100 domain objects in the default domain, enough to test on a lab or a small office, and the 30-day trial runs the Professional edition before falling back to free.
Best for: Teams that want Hyena-style bulk reports and actions in a browser, with delegation to help desk staff.
Pricing:
- Free edition: 100 domain objects, default domain only
- Standard: $595 a year for 1 domain and 2 technicians
- Professional: $1,795 a year for 1 domain and 2 technicians
- 30-day Professional evaluation
Watch out for:
- Services, sessions and printers on servers, which Hyena handles, are not on its edition list, so keep another tool for those.
- Approval workflows and automation are Professional-only, so Standard covers reports and delegation but not request handling.
Official site: ManageEngine ADManager Plus.
RSAT (Active Directory Users and Computers)
Many Hyena users already have the free baseline on their PCs. Since Windows 10 version 1809, Remote Server Administration Tools are added from Optional features in Settings, and the AD DS tools include Active Directory Users and Computers, Active Directory Administrative Center, Domains and Trusts, Sites and Services and the PowerShell module, per Microsoft's RSAT article.
Group Policy Management, DNS and DHCP consoles come in the same set. On Windows 11 25H2 on Arm64, Microsoft lists the AD DS, Certificate Services, Server Manager, Group Policy, DNS and DHCP tools as available, so admins on newer Arm laptops are covered too.
Best for: Admins who mainly reset passwords, edit groups and move objects and can live without Hyena's cross-domain grids.
Pricing:
- Free; part of Windows 10 and 11 Pro or Enterprise
Watch out for:
- It cannot be installed on Home or Standard editions of Windows, only Professional or Enterprise.
- Each console handles one area. There is no single view of shares, sessions and services across servers like Hyena's tree.
Official site: RSAT (Active Directory Users and Computers).
Windows Admin Center
Windows Admin Center moves Hyena's server side into a browser, with tools modeled on Server Manager. Microsoft describes it as a remote management tool for Windows Server running anywhere, physical, virtual, on-premises or in Azure, offered "at no extra cost." It also manages hyperconverged clusters, VMs and Storage Spaces Direct.
The release history lists version 2606 as the latest generally available release, with installer, VM management and accessibility improvements. Version 1903 added tools for Active Directory, DHCP and DNS, so basic directory tasks can be done from the same page.
Best for: Server admins who want a browser console for many Windows Servers instead of a desktop tool on each admin PC.
Pricing:
- Included with Windows Server at no extra cost
Watch out for:
- It is built around servers and clusters, so bulk user and group reporting is thinner than Hyena's exports.
- Microsoft frames it around Windows Server and Azure hybrid services; it is not meant for managing a large fleet of desktops.
Official site: Windows Admin Center.
PDQ Inventory
Hyena's computer-centric views overlap with PDQ Inventory, the inventory half of PDQ's on-premises product. On the PDQ pricing page it is sold only with PDQ Deploy as one on-premises product at $1,950 per admin per year, with unlimited endpoints.
The bundle means inventory and software pushes come from one vendor. Small businesses with under 50 employees, non-profits and schools get 15% off, and a 14-day trial is fully functional.
Best for: Desktop and server teams that need inventory plus software deployment, not only directory admin.
Pricing:
- PDQ Deploy and Inventory: $1,950 per admin per year, unlimited endpoints
- 15% off for businesses under 50 employees, non-profits and schools
- 14-day free trial
Watch out for:
- At $1,950 per admin each year it costs about six times a one-off Hyena licence, and each admin needs a separate one.
- If the subscription lapses, product updates and the Package Library stop.

Adaxes
Softerra's Adaxes goes where Hyena does not: role-based delegation and a self-service portal, so help desk staff and end users act within rules instead of holding domain rights. It manages AD, Entra ID, Exchange and Microsoft 365 through a web console.
Licences are perpetual and counted by enabled user accounts. The Adaxes purchase page lists $1,600 for up to 100 users and $5,957.89 for 1,000, plus optional maintenance, with a 30-day evaluation that needs no licence key. Rivals such as Active Roles and Cayosoft are covered in our Adaxes alternatives roundup.
Best for: Organisations that want to delegate AD tasks safely rather than give more people Hyena and admin rights.
Pricing:
- Up to 100 users: $1,600 perpetual, plus $480 for maintenance (AMS)
- 1,000 users: $5,957.89 perpetual
- 2,000 users: $10,800; quote above that
- 30-day evaluation
Watch out for:
- Pricing grows with enabled user accounts, not admins, so a large directory costs far more than a few Hyena seats.
- Major upgrades cost extra without maintenance; the purchase page lists upgrade fees from $640.
Official site: Adaxes.
PowerShell ActiveDirectory module
Anything Hyena does as a bulk action on users or groups can be scripted with Get-ADUser, Set-ADUser and their siblings. The module ships with RSAT, and Microsoft lists it as natively compatible with PowerShell 7 on Windows 10 1809 and later with RSAT installed.
PowerShell 7.6 is the current LTS release and is supported until November 14, 2028, per the PowerShell support lifecycle. Scripts can be scheduled, reviewed in source control and rerun the same way every time, which a GUI cannot match.
Best for: Admins who repeat the same bulk changes and reports and want them in version-controlled scripts.
Pricing:
- Free with RSAT; PowerShell 7 is open source under the MIT licence
Watch out for:
- There is no grid to browse, sort and export by hand. Staff who rely on Hyena's point-and-click views will need training.
- It covers AD objects only. Shares, sessions and services need other cmdlets or remote commands.
Official site: PowerShell ActiveDirectory module.
Sysinternals PsTools
For the server and session side of Hyena, Microsoft's Sysinternals PsTools are small command-line equivalents. PsService views and controls services, PsLoggedOn shows who is logged on locally and through shares, PsInfo lists system details, PsLogList dumps event logs and PsExec runs processes remotely.
The PsTools page, updated on September 10, 2026, offers the suite as one 4.9 MB ZIP, and none of the tools needs installation. That makes them easy to keep on an admin share or a USB stick.
Best for: Admins who want quick remote checks of services, logged-on users and logs from a command prompt.
Pricing:
- Free download from Microsoft
Watch out for:
- They are command-line tools, so output is text, not a sortable table you can export like Hyena's.
- They work one machine at a time unless you script loops around them.
Official site: Sysinternals PsTools.

When to stay with SystemTools Hyena
Stay with Hyena if a small team of admins wants one desktop tool for AD objects and server internals together. None of the picks above covers users, shares, sessions, open files, printers, services and event logs in one tree. At $329 per admin, or $150 at volume, and upgrades at half price that include two years of free updates, it is cheap for that coverage. The Hyena release notes show steady updates, with v15.0 in February 2023 followed by v15.2, v16.0 and v17.0.
Frequently asked questions
Is SystemTools Hyena still available?
Yes. SystemTools sells Hyena v17.0 as an Enterprise Edition, with a 30-day evaluation and free support during and after the trial.
How much does Hyena cost?
Each administrator who uses Hyena needs a one-time licence. The price per licence is $329 for 1 or 2, $250 for 5 to 9, $220 for 10 to 24 and $150 for 100 or more, in US dollars. The number of servers, domains or end users does not change the price.
Is there a free alternative to Hyena?
Not in one tool. RSAT covers AD users, groups and Group Policy, Windows Admin Center covers servers, and Sysinternals PsTools covers services, sessions and event logs from the command line. All three are free from Microsoft.
Does Hyena support Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025?
Yes. The product page lists Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 among the systems Hyena can run on and manage, and the release notes record Windows 11 workarounds in v15.0 and v16.0.
