Memento Time Travel Alternatives to Search Many Web Archives

Memento Time Travel (timetravel.mementoweb.org) was a free search page for old copies of web pages. You pasted a URL and it asked many public archives at once, using the Memento protocol. It no longer works. On August 7, 2025, Nicholas Taylor of the Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library wrote to the memento-dev list that budget and organizational changes meant the service would be sunset by the end of September 2025. Wikipedia gives September 5, 2025 as the end date. The address no longer loads.

The project site, mementoweb.org, returned in 2026 as a static page run by volunteers on GitHub Pages. It describes Time Travel in the past tense, as an aggregator that operated from 2015 to 2025. The protocol itself survives. The same page says all major web archives, including the Internet Archive, support it, which is why the tools below can still ask several archives in one go.

The first four picks search several archives at once. The last three are single archives worth checking by hand. For other jobs, see our guides to seeing one cached page fast, Wayback Machine alternatives, other large web archives, UK Web Archive alternatives and downloading a whole site.

Prices below are as of November 6, 2026. Our method is on How we review tools.

Web Archives

Armin Sebastian's extension adds a context menu and toolbar button that send the current URL to archives and caches. The project wiki lists eight sources: Wayback Machine, archive.is, Ghostarchive, Perma.cc, Megalodon, WebCite, Software Heritage and Yandex Cache. You can switch each one off and change the order in the options. The Firefox listing says a search can also start from the address bar when a server error appears.

Memento Time Travel used to be on the list. A user reported the shutdown in issue #126 in December 2025, and version 7.3.0 removed it on February 15, 2026, according to the changelog. Version 7.3.3 shipped on June 27, 2026. Firefox shows 68,512 users and a 4.7 rating, and the Chrome Web Store shows 50,000 users.

Best for: Anyone who wants several archives one right-click away in a normal desktop browser.

Pricing:

  • Free on Firefox and Chrome. Edge and Opera versions are linked from GitHub.
  • Safari: $5.99 on the Mac App Store, macOS 12 or later.
  • Source code under GPL-3.0.

Watch out for:

  • Most of the other archives Memento aggregated are not in the list yet. The developer opened issue #127 on February 15, 2026 to add them, and it is still open.
  • The Safari build is paid and Mac only. There is no iPhone or iPad version on the App Store.

cachedview.nl

Closest in spirit to the old Time Travel search box, cachedview.nl is a single web page. Type a URL and it gives you links for the Wayback Machine, Archive.today, the Library of Congress and Perma.cc, plus the live version. Nothing to install, so it works on a phone or a work laptop that blocks extensions.

Two extras. A bookmarklet you drag to the bookmarks bar runs the lookup on whatever page you have open. A screenshot button grabs the live page, but the site warns the image is not kept, so save it to your own computer if you need it later. The site credits Floris de Bijl as the maker.

Best for: Checking four archives from any browser without installing anything.

Pricing:

  • No price, plan or account is listed on cachedview.nl.

Watch out for:

  • Four archives only. Ghostarchive and national archives such as the Australian Web Archive are not covered.
  • The site states no terms, limits or funding, and it appears to be one person's project, so do not build a workflow that depends on it.

Resurrect Pages

A long-running Firefox add-on that opens a dead or changed page in an archive of your choice. Version 10, released October 19, 2026, added Ghost Archive and the Australian Web Archive, so the listing now names five sources: the Internet Archive, WebCite, archive.is, Ghost Archive and the Australian Web Archive.

The changelog shows version 9 on May 9, 2026 removed Google and MementoWeb as broken providers. The add-on has 3,382 users and a 4.6 rating from 36 reviews.

Best for: Firefox users who want Australia's national web archive in the menu.

Pricing:

  • Free, open source under the MIT licence.

Watch out for:

  • Firefox only. There is no Chrome, Edge or Safari version on the GitHub page.
  • The listing says the author does not read complaints left in reviews. Bug reports have to go to GitHub issues.

MemGator

Old Dominion University's web archiving group, one of the original Memento partners, wrote this aggregator in Go. Run memgator with a URL and it returns a TimeMap, the list of every capture it finds across its archives, in Link, JSON or CDXJ format. Add a date and it returns the capture closest to that moment.

Start it with memgator server and it listens on port 1208 with TimeMap, TimeGate and Memento endpoints. The README notes an /api alias kept for compatibility with the Time Travel API, so old scripts may need only a new host name. The archive list is a JSON file you can edit, which means you can add Arquivo.pt or a national library yourself.

Best for: Developers and researchers whose scripts called the Time Travel API.

Pricing:

  • Free, open source under the MIT licence.
  • Binaries for Windows, macOS and Linux on amd64 and arm64, plus the oduwsdl/memgator Docker image.

Watch out for:

  • The newest release is 1.0-rc9 from May 9, 2024, still marked as a release candidate, and the repo shows 47 open issues.
  • There is no public search page. You run, update and monitor the server yourself, including the archive list.

Wayback Machine

When the aggregators find nothing useful, go straight to web.archive.org. The Internet Archive's own Chrome extension (version 3.4.8, March 16, 2026, about 300,000 users) puts the snapshot count on its toolbar icon. It also opens the oldest or newest capture in one click and checks for a copy when a page returns a 4xx or 5xx error.

The same extension lists archived URLs under the current site and draws a sunburst site map, which helps when the page you want has moved. If no copy exists, Save Page Now stores the page, images and CSS included, though not the pages it links to.

Best for: Readers who want a full capture calendar and a way to save a page now.

Pricing:

  • Free, with no ads, paid for by donations.

Watch out for:

  • Captures can disappear. Site owners can email the archive to have their pages excluded, and the help page makes no promise about the outcome either way.
  • Save Page Now cannot crawl a whole site, and some sites block it or break it with their SSL setup.

archive.today

Privately run and anonymous, archive.today ignores robots.txt, so it often holds pages the Internet Archive was told to leave alone. It added Memento API support in July 2013 and, by Wikipedia's account, was one of the last major active users of the protocol when the aggregator closed.

Search by URL in the second box on the home page. The Bellingcat toolkit notes it accepts insite:, quotes and the * wildcard. The service answers on several mirrors, including archive.ph, archive.md and archive.is, and the old archive.is name has been deprecated since January 2019.

Best for: Pages that are missing from the Wayback Machine because the site blocked its crawler.

Pricing:

  • Free. No paid features, privately funded with donations.

Watch out for:

  • Trust is shaky. English Wikipedia banned its links on February 20, 2026 after its CAPTCHA page was used in a DDoS attack and editors found altered captures. China has blocked several of its domains since 2016.
  • Pages over 50 MB are rejected, and PDFs, audio and most video are not captured.

Arquivo.pt

Portugal's public web archive is run by the national science foundation, FCT, and holds files collected since the 1990s in several languages. Time Travel only matched URLs. Arquivo.pt also has a full-text search API, so you can find an old page by the words on it when you no longer know the address.

It speaks Memento too. The TimeGate is arquivo.pt/wayback/ followed by the URL, and the TimeMap comes in link, cdxj or json form, as the Portuguese open data portal documents under a CC BY 4.0 licence. That makes it an easy archive to add to a MemGator list.

Best for: Finding an old page by keyword, or adding a national archive to your own aggregator.

Pricing:

  • No price listed. Arquivo.pt is described as a public service run by FCT.
  • API limits: 250 requests per 60 seconds per IP for full-text and URL search, 400 for the Memento API.

Watch out for:

  • Go over the limits and you get HTTP 429. The API docs say IP addresses that keep exceeding them are permanently blocked, so throttle any bulk job.

If you relied on Memento Time Travel

There is nothing left to stay on. The hosted service is gone, and LANL's August 2025 post said the lab would hand it to any organization willing to host it, but mementoweb.org still describes the service in the past tense. If you have code built on Time Travel, keep the Memento logic and point it at a MemGator server, since the protocol still works at the archives themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is Memento Time Travel still working?

No. timetravel.mementoweb.org stopped serving searches in September 2025, and the mementoweb.org site now lists it as an aggregator that ran from 2015 to 2025. For the same one-box lookup, use cachedview.nl in a browser or the Web Archives extension.

What was the Memento project?

A research effort by the Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library and Old Dominion University, with funding from the Library of Congress and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Its lasting output is RFC 7089, which adds date negotiation to HTTP so a client can ask for a page as it was at a past moment. A third service, What Did It Look Like?, ended around 2021.

Does the Memento Time Travel browser extension still work?

Do not count on it. The Firefox add-on is still listed, with 248 users and a 2.5 rating, but its last update was April 25, 2024, before the shutdown. Two other extensions, Web Archives and Resurrect Pages, have already removed Memento as a source after the service went away.

Which time travel website shows old versions of any site?

No single site covers every archive now. The Wayback Machine is the usual first stop and shows a calendar of captures, archive.today fills gaps where sites block the Internet Archive, and cachedview.nl checks four archives from one box. If you need Portugal's archive or keyword search, add Arquivo.pt.
