The short version

What is Arquivo.pt?

Arquivo.pt is Portugal's national web archive, a free public service run by FCT, the Foundation for Science and Technology, through its FCCN unit. Unlike most archives, it lets you search old pages by the words on them, not only by URL.

It holds about 23 billion files from 73 million websites, with content back to 1996. The crawl centres on .pt domains and sites of national interest, but it also keeps some international sites, such as 197 million files from EU Horizon 2020 project sites, in several languages. It supports the Memento protocol, so even after Memento Time Travel shut down in September 2025, you can query it by URL directly or add it to your own aggregator.

Bottom line: try it when the Wayback Machine has nothing, or when you remember words from a page but not its address. Do not expect pages from the last 12 months.

What it does

Key features

Full-text page search

Search archived pages by keywords and narrow the results with a date slider, or look up a URL to see its captures.

Image search

A separate Images tab finds archived pictures and the pages they appeared on. It launched in March 2021.

Archive Page Now

Record a page immediately by browsing it. It is built on the open-source webrecorder pywb tool.

Open APIs

Full-text search, URL search and a Memento API, with TimeMaps in link, CDXJ or JSON. The API has run since 2012.

Some. It focuses on .pt domains and sites of national interest, plus some international sites. It kept 197 million files from EU Horizon 2020 project sites, for example.
